Street Pastors take to the streets of LakenhamIMG1609

The intention of a new initiative in Lakenham & Tuckswood is to listen to local people by walking theIMG1610 1039131streets and talking to those they meet.. They will pick up litter, paint out graffiti and make connections with all ages; the young and old and those in between. They hope in this way to bring the love of God out of the church walls directly onto the streets in practical ways.
To date four volunteers from local churches have been trained for this work. They are backed up by others who pray for them whilst they are out and about. The Pastors go out in twos at various times of the day as they are available.
“So far we have found many folk who are sad at the lack of community spirit. We have helped some people who are struggling with overgrown gardens,” (see pictures), said Pete Tyson, “Everyone we have met to date has welcomed us.”
The Pastors are in contact with the Police and the Police Community Support Officers who can be called upon at any time. They have also introduced themselves to local businesses and other groups who are working alongside the Safer Neighbourhood Team and Wardens.
Behind this local expression is a national charity based in London and a city centre group which operates on Friday and Saturday nights in the Pub and Club area of Norwich. You may have seen reports of their activities in the local press.
The initiative is another expression of the churches in the area working together in Lakenham and Tuckswood.. They have run regular children's events , summer Holiday Clubs, Easter and Halloween specials which have attracted large groups of children and proved to be popular with parents.
Joining Street Pastors is something anyone can do who has a few hours to spare during the week and a desire to build community spirit. There will be a new round of training for Street Pastors in September this year. The training takes place over four Saturdays and is essential for those who wish to be involved..
